Your training should fit your life - not compete with it.

There is more to good coaching than putting workouts into a calendar.

Your goals matter. But so do your work, family, health, recovery, motivation, previous training, injury history and everything else happening away from running.

My role is to understand the whole picture and build training around you.

That means a plan that can change when life changes, regular communication, meaningful feedback and a coaching relationship in which we both learn as we go.

The aim isn't simply to complete sessions. It's to help you become a stronger, more knowledgeable and more confident runner over the long term.

COACHING BUILT AROUND THE ATHLETE

Individual coaching, built on four simple principles.

HOW I COACH

01

Your training is built around your goals, experience, availability and response to training - rather than adapted from a generic template.

Individual

02

Training changes when you need it to. Feedback, recovery, races, illness, injury and life commitments all help shape what happens next.

Adaptable

03

The more I learn about you, the better I can coach you. Communication and honest feedback are central to the process.

Collaborative

04

The goal is not simply to get through the next training block. We work towards sustainable development, greater understanding and better performance over time.

Long term

ONE-TO-ONE COACHING

More than a training plan.

For runners who want personalised training, regular expert input and a coach who genuinely gets to know them.

Your programme evolves with you.

I analyse how training is going, listen to your feedback and make changes when needed, while helping you understand what we're doing and why.

ATHLETE FEEDBACK

What athletes say.

“Tom has helped me grow as a runner more than I ever could have alone. Tom is not only knowledgeable and experienced when setting a great program and sessions, he also helped me navigate illnesses and injury setbacks to achieve my goals and PB across all distances.”

James Cawthorpe

“Communication has always been superb, I have learnt so much about how to be a better runner both mentally and physically, plus nutrition and running shoes.”

Steve Howliston

“Incredible day — last few km with the crowds was up there with the best moments of my life. Thanks for all your help, Tom. Definitely couldn’t have done it without you.”

FREE MARATHON & ULTRA RUNNER'S TRAINING AUDIT

How well is your training actually supporting your goals?

Good training is about more than completing a weekly mileage target.

The Marathon & Ultra Runner's Training Audit will help you look more closely at the different parts of your current approach and identify where you're already doing well — and where there may be opportunities to improve.

You'll work through key areas of your training and receive a personalised summary to help you think more clearly about what to focus on next.

MEET YOUR COACH

Young Tom Payn running with his dad in Tiptree

I've spent most of my life learning about endurance sport — first as an athlete and, since 2015, as a coach.

Along the way I've represented England from 10km to 100km, represented Great Britain at two Ultra Trail World Championships and worked with more than 200 athletes from around the world.

But my own running experience isn't a template for how somebody else should train.

Coaching has taught me that understanding the person in front of me matters far more.

That belief led me to complete a postgraduate Master's in Sports Performance Coaching and continues to shape an athlete-centred approach built around communication, learning, health, performance and enjoyment.
